Here's the Deal (2022)
The Story
For our COMM 242 final project, each student was tasked with pitching an individual film to the entire class. Here's the Deal was among the top voted films, providing me with a wonderful opportunity to venture into comedy. Over the past few years I've focused on writing dramas, so when time came to develop this story I decided to test my comedic abilities. Here's the Deal was inspired by a real-life story in which a student tried selling my friends and I a bag of ketchup for a measly one dollar. One of my friends actually bought it, and were tasked with selling it for two, to which he succeeded. This odd occurrence influenced one of two major "catches" of this film. The second catch primarily resulted from our casting. As I was trying to think of actors who could be potentially interested in being in our film, I remembered a guy who I became friends with while participating in a production of Little Women. He was quite a talented singer and actor, and I figured if we could incorporate music into our film, we'd be able to stand out among the crowd. Thankfully, Josh agreed to playing our musical drug dealer, and our shoots ended up being some of the most fun of our semester! Ultimately, Here's the Deal proved to be a fun romp in comedic misdirection.
The Story
Out of Time (2022)
Out of Time is a very personal film. It was not only the first film I've ever directed at college, it also contains a narrative that heavily mirrors my personal life. For class we were tasked with creating a 3-5 minute experimental film, and the idea for this short simply came from experiences I've had in the past. My freshman year of college was very strange, I spent a lot of time reflecting on high school, a period of my life which I knew I could never truly revisit. The real kicker came during the end of my freshman year when I became really sick. I might as well have disappeared because one minute I was on campus, the next I wasn't. I left on a cold, rainy morning in early May, my father picking me up at the crack of dawn because I couldn't sleep with my excessive coughing. Just as I felt like I missed out on a lot of closure with high school due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I felt like my first year at Penn State simply ended without any notice or warning; one minute I was at school, the next I was gone. When I came back to campus about a month later, to visit some friends who live in the area, I had the most amazing evening. During my final night, I explored the mostly deserted campus, tracing back all the important moments of the past several months which have shaped me into who I now am. The most emotional part of this was visiting Irvin Hall, my home for many months. I grew attached to this building, I once lived there yet now it was nothing more than a locked, empty building. I never felt more detached yet connected to something in my life. Directing and writing Out of Time blessed me with the exceptional opportunity to harness these complex feelings.
Men of Circumstance Animatic (2021)
The Story
Men of Circumstance exemplifies an opportunity I've always wanted to take, yet never truly had the time to do so under normal conditions. The COVID-19 shutdown opened my life to far more free time than I knew what to do with, and it reawakened my creative spirit. I've always wanted to be a storyboard artist, I have such a love for the animation medium and still do to this day. During the Spring of 2020, however, I began to get second thoughts about making this my career. While I am a decent artist, I don't think I can hold a candle to the talent of digital artists you can find online, let alone the ones who actually get hired to draw for their career. Thus, I decided it'd be much easier to major in film production as I entered college. However, with so much time on my hands, I figured if I ever wanted to dabble in storyboarding, if I ever regretted not at least trying it, this would be the time to test out my skills. Men of Circumstance was a challenging project which I remain exceptionally proud of to this day. The task could be unforgiving, I spent months using every aching creative bone in my body toward perfecting the quality of the visuals and narrative. I constructed this rich universe of dynamic, emotionally complex characters who require develop through a serialized story. Concepts like inter-dimensional travel, the entertainment industry, brotherhood, animation as a medium, and trust embody the heart and intentions of this pitch. I hope to someday turn this animatic, which consumed my final year of high school, into a full-fledged adult animated production.
They Still Want More (2022)
The Story
The 48 Hour Film Festival was an event I had first caught wind of when I arrived to college in August 2021. Even though I didn't really have a vision for how the schoolyear would shape out, I knew for certain this would be a feature of it. "They Still Want More," directed by Yeji Lee and written by Shreya Narsinghani ended up being my group's contribution to that year's film festival. While I wanted to hold a greater role in the storytelling aspect of this feature, in the end I had a blast working with these incredibly talented and devoted students. I used to act a lot in high school, and while I am no professional it was a really fun change of pace getting to play a psychotic and creepy RA in a student-made horror film. Okay, maybe I shouldn't sound too excited...

My acting in this certainly could've been better, but considering the 48 Hour deadline we were dealing with I didn't have too much time to convey my character more naturally. Still, I did end up reciting (most of) my lines, and got to experience what it was like acting on a larger-scale project. The most important aspect of this production, however, would end up being the long-term relationships I would develop from it. Rey and I have becoming directing partners for Nittany Talk and have worked closely together on a majority of the series. Courtney and Yeji have also joined Nittany Talk, and it is amazing getting to grow together professionally! I am incredibly thankful for this experience and all the connections it has given me to some truly wonderful people. Without this short, I don't think we'd be anywhere near as close.
